When glass shards mix with paper and other recyclables,
they can damage processing equipment, lower the value
of the recycled paper, increase processing costs, and
endanger workers at the sorting stations.
After researching programs in other jurisdictions and
seeking the opinions of Thurston County residents, it was
decided that collecting glass in a separate container at
the curb offered the highest market value, convenience
and flexibility.
Glass represents a small percentage of the recycling stream and most residents do not produce a very large
quantity. Picking up the glass requires a separate route truck, therefore, glass will be picked up at the curb every four weeks (every other recycle week). We encourage
residents to use their recycle stickers sent with the annual
calendar. Draw a circle around the “R” for the week that
glass will be picked up, or use some other type of
reminder. |
You can use the three stacking bins from the old recycling system to collect glass, or use another durable
plastic container (provided it is between 5 and 20 gallons
in size). Using a separate container for glass will actually save space in your main recycle bin. Remember that workers will still be manually lifting and emptying this container, so please do not make it too heavy.
Glass bottles and jars are recyclable. Items NOT allowed
are plate glass, window glass, mirrors, light bulbs,
ceramics or kitchen cookware.
Glass may also be taken to the Blue Recycling Boxes
located throughout Thurston County. For locations, call
(360) 357-2491, look in the Brown Pages of your Dex
phone book, or visit www.co.thurston.wa.us/wwm. |
